Inspector General of Police Japheth Kanja has reaffirmed the National Police Service’s commitment to safeguarding citizens, businesses, and visitors during the busy festive season, promising that security will be tightened across the country.
On Friday, during a consultative session with regional commanders in South C, Nairobi, Kanja highlighted the importance of joint planning and coordination among police units to prevent crime before it happens. He stressed that consistent dialogue between intelligence teams and field commanders is central to staying ahead of criminal networks.
“We must, from time to time, come together to discuss and strategise because we must at all times remain a step ahead of criminals,” Kanja said. “We are hopeful that even as the festive season draws closer, all Kenyans will have enough security.”
Kanja explained that the upcoming security operations will be intelligence-driven, involving officers from the National Intelligence Service, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, local police formations, and ground commanders.
He underscored that effective law enforcement requires teamwork, open communication, and sharing of information across all levels of command.
“When we all work together, we have intelligence-led operations, meaning everyone is contributing. We bring together all officers and agencies to ensure unity of purpose, and when we do that, we all succeed,” he added.
The IG also highlighted that the festive period is often accompanied by higher social interaction, travel, and gatherings, which can lead to increased criminal activity, including alcohol-related offences. He assured that police patrols will be strengthened in towns and urban areas to detect and respond to potential threats.
In addition, Kanja issued a stern warning to individuals involved in producing and distributing illegal brews and narcotic substances, promising that law enforcement will continue working with national and county authorities to dismantle these networks.
“All illicit brews, the ones commonly referred to as second-generation alcohol, and narcotic drugs are destroying our society,” he said.
The IG further urged officers to remain vigilant, disciplined, and professional while enforcing the law, emphasizing that the police must protect citizens’ rights while maintaining public order.
As the holiday season approaches, with its increased movement, shopping, and social events, authorities are keen to prevent incidents that could disrupt celebrations.
Kanja’s reassurances come as a reminder of the importance of cooperation between security agencies and communities to ensure that the festive period remains safe for all.
